Back in my office, I’d spent some time with the Book while Autumn played with Tilly and worked through my list of questions. I re-read Finn’s briefing and tried to validate the origins of “The Recorder won’t bond Hobs” and find out why Moira had cared. And I worried because I’d forgotten half the things I’d meant to ask the damn Book. I needed to get better at this job.

The conclusion I’d arrived at after the Book answered a lot of my questions was many things were being done simply because other people had done them and no one knew why anymore. It reminded me of a training the council had sent me on about steering change, or was it driving change? It was some pointlessly macho-titled course anyway, but the content had been useful.

The Book also suggested some things I could experiment with to familiarise myself with the subtler uses of the power. They’d probably have to wait until next week. I couldn’t catch up on a thousand years in a week or two.

When I collected Aysha, she’d asked to breathe some fresh Scottish air after three days in court. So the four of us walked around the gardens just as dusk was falling.

“Fi says the Scottish call this time of day the gloaming—isn’t it a lovely word?”

Aysha grinned at me, “Roaming in the gloaming—isn’t it a song? It always sounded rude to me.” She gestured at the woodland surrounding her and asked, “Is this all yours?”

I nodded. “This and a lot more besides will be mine once the probate completes, yes.”

She looked thoughtful, considering an enormous tree with a trunk about three feet across. “And Jamie wanted to send the bulldozers in? Just criminal! Any news on what they’ll do with him and his dad?”

I filled her on the gossip from the local paper Fi had brought in for me. It asked a lot of leading questions it had no answers to, because none of the Fergussons’ offices were saying anything.

I’d brought Fi up to date on what had really happened. But I’d also sworn her to secrecy as far as any locals were concerned. Anyone from the realms would already know about it, but I didn’t want the news reaching the local populace in Gretna Green, or more importantly, the local paper.

The paper was asking things like, “Have the Fergussons absconded with client funds?” Because neither of them could be reached for comment, the paper had gone to town on their own theories.

Aysha said, “It makes me wonder whether Jack the Ripper, Lord Lucan and Amelia Earhart were all wandering around one of the realms at some point.”

I laughed. “Maybe a Recorder ruled on them too—well, not Earhart, but you know what I mean. Mabon said John’s sentencing is happening at the same time as the St David’s Day festival, so I’ll be there for that, and it’s possible Jamie will be released by the Fae healers around then.”

Aysha said thoughtfully, “So no trial for John, just sentencing?”

I nodded.
